Frequently Asked Questions About Music Composition and Sound Design

Sound design & Music

  • Foley is a specific type of sound design where sounds are performed and recorded live in sync with picture — things like footsteps, clothing movement, and object handling. Sound design is the broader process of creating all audio for a project. Foley is one tool within sound design, used to add realism and intimacy to physical actions on screen.

  • Free libraries can work for simple projects, but they have real limitations — sounds are generic, used by thousands of other creators, and rarely fit your specific visuals perfectly. A custom sound designer creates audio tailored precisely to your project, giving it a unique identity and professional polish that library sounds can't match.

  • Indie game music composition is typically a few hundred dollars but depends on the length of the soundtrack, the style of music, and the composer's experience. Many composers work with indie developers on flexible arrangements. The best approach is to reach out with your project details for a custom quote — most composers are happy to discuss what's possible within your budget.

  • Ideally, bring a sound designer on as early as possible — even during pre-production. Early involvement means the sound designer can flag potential audio challenges before they become expensive problems in post, and it gives more time for custom sound creation. At minimum, have someone lined up before you reach picture lock. Last-minute sound design almost always results in rushed work that doesn't serve the film as well as it could.

  • Yes — seamless looping is a core part of composing music and ambiences. Every looping track I deliver has clean, natural-sounding loop points that don't create an obvious seam when the track repeats. For games with longer play sessions this is essential, and I plan the composition around the loop from the start rather than trying to force a loop onto a finished track.

  • Stems are separate audio files for each element of your mix — for example, a music stems delivery might include separate files for strings, brass, percussion, and full mix. For sound design, stems might separate dialogue, effects, foley, and ambience. Stems give you flexibility in post if you need to adjust levels or replace one element without affecting the rest. They're particularly useful for games (adaptive audio), international film releases (M&E requirements), and any project that may need remixing later.

  • I make it a priority to get on a call with you or message you in order to confirm exactly what you’re looking for before the project begins. I also send regular updates throughout the process (unless you would prefer I don’t). If you are not satisfied with anything within the scope of work after completion I am more than happy to go back and revise at no extra cost.

  • Yes — handling both music and sound design for a single project is actually one of the biggest advantages of working with Wrangler Audio. When one person is responsible for both, the music and audio feel cohesive and inhabit the same sonic world. There's no coordination gap between a composer and a separate sound designer, which saves you time and produces a more unified result.

  • Absolutely. The portfolio on this site covers a range of styles and project types, but if nothing there closely matches what you're looking for, just reach out and describe your project. I'm happy to send additional samples or point you to relevant work before you make any decisions.

  • Every project starts with a call or message to align on exactly what you need — style, scope, timeline, and deliverables. Once we're on the same page I get to work and send regular updates throughout. After delivery, if anything isn't right within the agreed scope, I'll revise it at no extra cost. The goal is for you to have audio you're genuinely proud of.

  • Budget is always part of the conversation. Wrangler Audio specializes in working with independent creators and small production teams, which means understanding the realities of indie budgets. Reach out with your project details and budget and I'll tell you honestly what's possible — sometimes a focused scope delivers more impact than trying to cover everything at once.
